Masterwork and upgrades - player guide
What it is
The masterwork bench turns tools and weapons you already own into better ones. Each upgrade uses up the old tool, some materials and Voyage Tokens. The bench also makes jewellery, a luck charm and a crystal lantern, and it carves inscriptions: one small bonus on one tool. Simple island food, drinks and perfume can be made anywhere.
Where the bench is
The bench is inside the Ashby Avenue blacksmith in Palmera Bay, in the north west corner, to the left of the metal counter. Stand there and press shift and enter. You can also open the masterwork menu from the game menu under Village life, More to do, or by typing /masterwork. Upgrades, jewellery, charms, lanterns and inscriptions must be made at the bench; the menu tells you what you have and what you still need.
Tool upgrades
Bronze pickaxe into tempered pickaxe: the bronze pickaxe, 2 iron bars, 1 island hardwood, 1 sea salt and 3 tokens. Finds ore 88 times in 100, swings faster than bronze and lasts about 1000 swings.
Tempered pickaxe into obsidian pickaxe: the tempered pickaxe, 3 volcanic glass, 1 gold nugget, 1 island hardwood and 8 tokens. Finds ore 92 times in 100, swings faster still and lasts about 1600 swings.
Master fishing rod into pearl inlaid rod: the master rod, 2 pearls, 2 island hardwood, 1 string and 6 tokens. The best rod in the game: fish bite a little sooner than on a master rod, the line never snaps, even on a big fish, and rare fish take the hook a little more often.
Axe into hardwood axe: the axe, 3 island hardwood, 1 iron bar and 3 tokens. Hits harder than a plain axe and fells trees in fewer blows. It also works anywhere an axe is needed, such as the ironwood on Aurora Isles and the birch in Fjordheim, so you do not need to keep a plain axe for those.
Knife into volcanic glass blade: the knife, 2 volcanic glass, 1 leather and 4 tokens. A quick close weapon that cuts deeper than a knife. Keep a plain knife as well: the blade is a weapon, not a kitchen knife.
Sword into crystal sword: the sword, 2 crystal shards, 1 ancient relic, 1 gold nugget and 8 tokens. Each blow strikes harder than a plain sword, but it swings a little slower.
Masterwork pickaxes wear out like any pickaxe and warn you at half, three quarters and fifty swings left. When one breaks, its inscription is lost with it. They mine ore veins and also work anywhere a pickaxe is needed, such as the volcanic glass on Aurora Isles and the crystal vein at Crystal Lake.
JEWELLERY, CHARMS AND LANTERNS (at the bench)
Pearl necklace: 3 pearls, 1 gold nugget, 1 string and 2 tokens. A gift for your husband or wife.
Gold nugget ring: 2 gold nuggets and 1 token. A smaller gift for your husband or wife.
To give either one, stand close to your husband or wife and use it. Your marriage grows, and people think a little better of you. A couple can share one such gift a day.
Relic charm: 1 ancient relic, 1 crystal shard, 1 string and 2 tokens. Use it for half an hour of luck: masterwork pickaxes find ore more often and rare fish bite more often. One charm at a time; it keeps counting through a restart of the server.
Crystal lantern: 3 crystal shards, 1 iron bar, 1 glass bottle and 3 tokens. Carry it in your bag and it lights the deep levels of the crystal caves, just like a miner's lantern. It never runs out.
ISLAND FOOD, DRINKS AND PERFUME (anywhere)
Coconut water: 1 coconut, with a knife in your bag. Eases your thirst.
Tropical punch: 2 coconuts and 1 orchid, with a knife in your bag. Quenches thirst and gives energy.
Salted fish: 2 fish fillets and 1 sea salt make 2. Much more filling than a fillet, but salty.
Salted meat: 2 pieces of eatable boar meat and 1 sea salt make 2. A very filling meal, but salty.
Orchid perfume: 3 orchids, 1 glass bottle and 1 water bottle. Use it to freshen up: it takes away a good part of the dirt and smell, and once a day people around you notice.
Inscriptions
At the bench, one crystal shard and 2 tokens carve one bonus into a masterwork tool. Each tool holds one inscription. Carving a new one replaces the old.
Pickaxes: keen, finds ore 4 times in 100 more often; enduring, lasts three tenths longer; lucky, about one good swing in twelve breaks off an extra piece.
Pearl inlaid rod: swift, fish bite about a sixth sooner; deep, rare fish take the hook more often.
Hardwood axe, volcanic glass blade and crystal sword: honed, 25 more damage on every hit; heavy, up to 40 more damage on a hit.
Collections and titles
Each collection is rewarded once, with a title and Voyage Tokens. Wear the title from Village life, Your standing, Your titles.
The masterwork set: make an obsidian pickaxe, a pearl inlaid rod, a hardwood axe, a volcanic glass blade and a crystal sword. Title Master Artisan and 20 tokens.
The island pantry: make coconut water, tropical punch, salted fish, salted meat and orchid perfume. Title Island Cook and 5 tokens.
The jeweller's case: make a pearl necklace, a gold nugget ring, a relic charm and a crystal lantern. Title Jeweller of the Isles and 6 tokens.
The rune carver: inscribe three different tools. Title Rune Carver and 4 tokens.
Every piece you make also counts towards your Voyager Pass.

Good to know
Masterwork items are not bought or sold in any shop.
You cannot craft in an arena, where your bag is only a borrowed one, and perfume, the relic charm and the jewellery gifts cannot be used from a borrowed arena bag or while you are dead.
Type /masterwork to open the menu from anywhere.
