The forest service
The Forest Service replants the world's damaged woods, one tree at a time. Every tree you plant is real: it stays where you planted it, grows over real days, needs water, and can die. Open it from the living world menu (slash world) or type slash forestservice.
1. tree seeds
Five kinds of tree: English oak (acorn), Scots pine (pine cone), field maple (maple key), silver birch (birch seed) and rowan (rowan seed). Gather seeds at four seed places: the oak and maple grove in Beautiful Forest, the high pine stand up on the elevated pine forest of Juniper Forest, the birch thicket in Bear Forest and the rowan glade in Dominican Forest. Stand in one and press shift enter to search. Up to 6 seeds a day, 3 searches per place. The nursery shop also sells any seed for 40 points, 5 a day.
2. the nursery
The Valley Tree Nursery is in the Middle Valley, east of the pond, a little south of it. Press shift enter there. You have 3 pots. Sow a seed (that also gives it its first water), water it once more at the tap at least 6 hours later, and after one real day pot it out: you get a sapling of that tree. A seedling not watered a second time within a day and a half withers. At the bench you can make a tree guard from 3 branches, 3 a day; the shop sells guards for 60 points.
3. planting
Replanting sites: the Scarred Wood in the battle marked forest (goal 150 trees), the Old Clearing in Beautiful Forest, the Oasis Edge shelter belt in the Arid Grassland and the Valley Green Belt in the Middle Valley (goal 100 each). Inside a site, use a sapling from your bag, or press shift enter and choose it. The ground must be soil, grass or sand under the open sky, at least 3 steps from any other tree. Up to 5 trees a day. The site menu can point you to the nearest open spot with a marker sound. The planter may name the tree.
4. growth and care
A tree is a sapling for its first 2 days of cared-for growth, then a young tree, and a mature tree after 7 days. It only grows while it has had water in the last 2 days. Anyone can water any tree: stand beside it, press shift enter and choose water; you need a watering can (never used up), water in a clay pot or a cup of water (one is used). A tree can be watered once every 20 hours. Without water for more than 2 days it loses health, and at no health it dies; mature trees have deep roots and never die of drought. Rain freshens every tree a little but is no substitute for watering. On a dry spell day, one site's trees dry out in one day instead of two: forest news says which. Every 6 hours deer or hares may nibble an unguarded young tree; a tree guard stops that. Your first 10 waterings a day pay points, and 5 in a day make a care round with a bonus. The site menu finds the nearest thirsty tree for you.
Beside a tree, shift enter tells its kind, stage, planter, name, health and when it was last watered. A mature tree is full of birds; choose listen to hear it.
5. coppicing
Once a week the planter of a mature tree may coppice it with an axe: 1 wood and 2 branches, and half the time a seed. Up to 3 trees a day.
6. goals, titles and rewards
Each site has a goal. At 25, 50 and 75 percent everyone hears the news; when it is reached, everyone who planted there gets a trophy and their names are carved on the planters' stone at the site. Titles: Tree Planter (your first tree), Forester (5 of your trees mature and 50 trees watered), Guardian of the Greenwood (all five kinds grown to maturity and 200 trees watered). Each kind of tree you grow to maturity is a piece of the tree collection. The weekly board counts trees cared for: 1 per watering, 2 per planting.
