THE WALKIE-TALKIE AND THE NOTEBOOK

Two small things you carry. Both are bought with points and both are used the same way: take them out of your bag and use them.

THE WALKIE-TALKIE
Buy one from the points shop. Use it from your bag and a radio menu opens: turn it on or off, say something, change channel, or see who else is listening.
There are nine channels, numbered one to nine. Pick one and tell your friends the number; that is the whole arrangement. What you say goes to everybody who is on that same channel AND is carrying a walkie-talkie of their own. Somebody without a set hears nothing, however close they are standing.
Distance does not matter. Channel one from one side of the world reaches channel one on the other side. This is the point of it: it is for keeping in touch with people you are not standing next to.
It comes to you in the same place as arena talk, so it reads clearly and you always know it came over the radio and not from somebody beside you.
The ordinary rules apply. You cannot use it while your chat is stopped. You cannot send links over it. You cannot use it while you are asleep. In jail you get nothing but "nought per cent signal" - the walls see to that. And there is a short pause between messages so nobody can flood a channel.

THE NOTEBOOK
Buy one from the points shop. Use it from your bag and it opens. It holds thirty pages and each page holds up to two hundred letters.
Write down whatever you want to remember: where you left something, a recipe you worked out, which radio channel your friends are on, the name of somebody who owes you. Choose a page to have it read out, and you are asked whether you want to tear it out.
There is also "Write down where I am now". That writes down the map you are standing on and the part of it you are in, in words. It does not write down numbers, because numbers would not help you find your way back; the name of the place will. When you get there, look around and you will find the rest.
