BREAD, DAIRY AND PRESERVES

A kitchen chain that starts with what you grow and ends with food you can carry for days. Everything here is made the ordinary way: put the things in your bag, use one on the other, and stand near a fire where a fire is needed.

FROM WHEAT TO BREAD
Wheat and a hammer make flour. Three wheat gives you two flour; you grind it down and keep the hammer.
Flour and water make dough. Two flour and one water gives you one dough. No fire needed for this part.
Dough and a skillet, over a fire, make bread. One dough gives two good loaves.
Dough and a skillet, over a fire, also make simit. Two dough gives you three rings of bread crusted with sesame. Simit is the one to carry: bread you eat while you are still walking.
Eggs and wheat make fresh pasta. Two eggs and three wheat give you two portions, worked with a hammer.

FROM MILK
All of these use a pot and none of them need a fire.
Four milk makes one cheese. The milk sets and you press it into a round.
Three milk makes two butter. You churn it until the butter comes.
Two milk makes two yoghurt. The milk simply thickens.
Cheese and butter keep far better than the milk they came from, which is the point of making them.

PRESERVES
Six berries and a pot over a fire make two jam. The berries boil right down into something dark and sweet.
Four apples and a pot make three dried fruit. You slice it thin and dry it. Light to carry and it will not spoil on you.
Three watermelon and a pot make three pickles. The rind is cut down and kept in brine. Sharp on the tongue and it lasts a very long time.

COFFEE
Coffee beans are sold in the points shop. Two beans in a pot over a fire make one cup of coffee: dark, rich and the right thing at the start of a long day.

WHY BOTHER
Raw food spoils and weighs on you. What you make here does not. A bag of simit, dried fruit, cheese and pickles will keep you fed a long way from any town, which is exactly what you want before a long trip, a mine, or a night out on a map with no shops.
Doing this work also counts towards how good you are as a cook, and a better cook turns out better food from the same ingredients. See the page on trades and mastery.
